My computer was my close friend when I was a teenager and I used to spend hours playing games or watching movies. One of the movies that I really enjoyed was “Hackers (1995)”. I was surprised how much knowledge the hackers need to have about computer science. That incident motivated me to learn more about hackers and their world.

I started by reading ““How Hackers control your network”” that I borrowed from the public library of my hometown. I had limited knowledge about computers and network architecture and did not understand many of the terms and concepts in the book. I felt to become like one of the hacker heroes in the movie I need to be more knowledgeable about their world. Enjoying their extraordinary skills, I started learning about the different subjects in Computer Science.

A childhood dream that started with a movie led to a passion for computer science and cyber security which later I continued in Academia as an undergrad and graduate student. During my education I have gained deep knowledge about computer software, programming, network and computer architecture. Combining these branches of knowledge with security science, such as software vulnerabilities and network security has enabled me to understand how hackers exploit the vulnerable systems.

During the day, almost everything I do directly or indirectly is related to the field of security. I work as a senior security researcher in a private R&D Company. In my personal weblog [], my [] team weblog ([].github.io), and my Facebook and Twitter accounts, all I talk about is security. In my free time I participate in security contests such as [] competitions and solve security challenges. Most of my close friends work in the security industry. I prefer listening to a podcast on security issues than music! Information security has become an inseparable part of my life and I am deeply passionate about it. I feel great when I find vulnerabilities in software and systems that others have not seen.

I know C/C++, PHP, JavaScript, Assembly, Python, TCL and .Net based programming languages and have passed advanced courses like Advanced Operating systems, Advanced Computer Networks and Advanced Computer Architecture. I have also obtained CIW certification for web design and programming that requires passing a 580-hours coursework. Furthermore, I have taken extracurricular courses such as CCNA, MCSE 2003, Linux+, CWNA, Security+ and Network+. It is worth mentioning that I have received Advanced Malware analysis certification from Sharif University of Technology. Besides, I work and research on routing protocol security, secure routers and their vulnerabilities as a researcher where I work on Cisco IOS architecture.

I have always been curious about different aspects of security. For this reason I decided to do my Master thesis about [] aiming at merging data-mining methods with my work experience. I managed to publish 2 papers about Malware detection in international conferences. Furthermore, I have participated in many Hacking competitions such as [] contests to challenge my knowledge. Currently I am a senior member of [] team, one of the top Iranian teams and have received several awards in local competitions with [] and [] teams including [] and [] competitions.

After several years of experience in security, I have decided to further explore the field and continue my studies as a PhD student. I believe that the current security mechanisms are not sufficient and we need more intelligent systems like Anti-virus or IDPS that work based on machine learning instead of signature matching and would like to use my academic knowledge combined with my experience in industry in order to make more intelligent and secure systems.

In addition to the great reputation of the [] department of computer science, I also got to learn about the security research group via participating in [] 2014. In particular, I am quite excited about the work of Prof. []’s group, projects and publications. In fact, my Master thesis method overlaps with one of their current projects that is called []. I strongly believe [] is the best place that can help me become a better security scientist and eagerly look forward to be a part of [] academic community.
